What to wear running in the cold

Most runners overdress for the cold. You warm up within the first mile, so the goal is to start a little chilly and stay dry. This guide pairs each temperature band with the layers that usually work, then links to the gear we compare in each category.

Rule of thumb: Dress as if it were 15 to 20°F (8 to 11°C) warmer than the thermometer reads. Add a layer for wind, rain, a slow pace or a long run.

What to wear by temperature

General guidance for steady, easy running on a dry day with little wind. Everyone runs a little differently, so adjust for wind, rain, effort and how warm you tend to run.
