# What to wear running in the cold

Most runners overdress for the cold. You warm up within the first mile, so the goal is to start a little chilly and stay dry. This guide pairs each temperature band with the layers that usually work, then links to the gear we compare in each category.

**Rule of thumb:** Dress as if it were 15 to 20°F (8 to 11°C) warmer than the thermometer reads. Add a layer for wind, rain, a slow pace or a long run.

## What to wear by temperature

General guidance for steady, easy running on a dry day with little wind. Everyone runs a little differently, so adjust for wind, rain, effort and how warm you tend to run.

| Temperature | Top | Legs | Hands | Head & neck | Feet |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 to 60°F (10 to 16°C) | T-shirt or light long sleeve | Shorts | None | None, or a cap for sun | Regular running socks |
| 40 to 50°F (4 to 10°C) | Light long sleeve | Shorts or light tights | Light gloves if your hands run cold | Headband if it's windy | Light merino-blend socks |
| 30 to 40°F (-1 to 4°C) | Midweight long sleeve, or a light top under a wind shell | Tights | Light gloves | Headband or thin beanie | Merino-blend socks |
| 20 to 30°F (-7 to -1°C) | Base layer plus a wind shell, or a thermal long sleeve | Thermal tights | Midweight running gloves | Beanie, plus a neck gaiter on windy days | Merino socks with light cushion |
| 10 to 20°F (-12 to -7°C) | Thermal base layer plus a wind jacket or insulated vest | Thermal tights, ideally with wind panels | Convertible gloves or mittens | Warm beanie and a neck gaiter | Cold-weather merino socks, crew height |
| 0 to 10°F (-18 to -12°C) | Thermal base, a midlayer and a windproof or insulated jacket | Windproof tights, or tights under wind pants | Insulated mittens, with liners if needed | Balaclava, or a beanie plus a gaiter over your face | Cold-weather merino socks; waterproof socks in slush |
| Below 0°F (-18°C) | Everything above, with no skin showing | Windproof tights, or tights under wind pants | Insulated mittens over liner gloves | Balaclava with no skin exposed | Cold-weather merino socks, kept dry |

## Adjust for conditions

- **Wind.** Wind strips heat fast. Add a wind shell, or dress for the next colder band. Head out into the wind so it's at your back on the way home, when you're sweaty.
- **Rain and wet snow.** Near freezing, wet is harder than cold. Wear a water-resistant layer, skip cotton entirely, and change into dry clothes as soon as you stop.
- **Darkness.** Fall evenings get dark early. Wear reflective details at your ankles and wrists, where movement catches a driver's eye, or a high-visibility layer.
- **Effort and distance.** Dress lighter for intervals and races. Dress warmer for easy runs, long runs and walk breaks, when you make less heat.
- **Wind chill and frostbite.** Check the wind chill, not just the temperature. At 0°F with a 15 mph wind, the wind chill is −19°F, and the National Weather Service says exposed skin can freeze in 30 minutes. On days like that, cover all skin, shorten the run, or stay close to home.
